Pirelli has received approval to produce its Cyber Tyre-equipped connected tires at its Rome, Georgia, U.S. plant. These tires feature built-in sensors that collect data and integrate with vehicle electronic systems—such as ABS anti-lock braking and vehicle stability control—to enhance driving dynamics and safety. For over a year, concerns had persisted that Pirelli might be barred from manufacturing such tires in the U.S., particularly amid heightened U.S. government restrictions on technology transfers to China, given that China’s Sinochem Group holds a 34.1% stake in Pirelli. The Italian government has since intervened in the matter. Claudio Zanardo, CEO of Pirelli North America, stated that this approval marks a significant milestone for the company in the U.S., reflecting its commitment to deploying advanced technologies and strengthening its local industrial footprint. The plant currently has an annual capacity of 400,000 tires, though the company has not disclosed specific additional production volumes for the Cyber Tyre.
