Nissan has suspended development of the all-electric version of its Qashqai model as part of its global product lineup streamlining and cost-cutting initiative. The project, originally slated for launch in early 2030, had been a key component of the UK’s electrification manufacturing strategy and was planned for production at Nissan’s Sunderland plant. Nissan is currently in negotiations with the UK government regarding new development plans and financial support for the Sunderland facility, with details expected to be announced within several months. Meanwhile, the UK is considering relaxing mandatory electric vehicle (EV) sales targets. Nissan has also entered into a partnership with Chery, planning to utilize one of Sunderland’s production lines to manufacture Chery models, thereby enabling more flexible adjustments to its capacity structure. This move reflects Nissan’s broader recalibration of its electrification strategy. Earlier this year, Nissan canceled plans to produce two all-electric SUVs at its U.S. plants, shifting focus instead toward hybrid vehicles. The company also aims to reduce its global vehicle lineup from 56 models to 45. Amid trade uncertainties stemming from the European Union’s new rules on local content requirements for EVs, Nissan is simultaneously adjusting its supply chain footprint—officially scrapping its previously announced plan to build an integrated e-drive motor, inverter, and gearbox plant in Sunderland. Overall, Nissan’s EV rollout is now shifting toward a more cautious and balanced approach.
