In May 2026, China's new energy vehicle (NEV) market underwent structural shifts. Wholesale sales of range-extended electric vehicles (REEVs) totaled 95,000 units, down 24.9% year-over-year—the steepest single-month decline in nearly five years. From January to May 2026, cumulative REEV sales reached 410,000 units, a 9.7% year-over-year decrease, with their market share falling from 10.3% a year earlier to 7.0%. In contrast, the battery electric vehicle (BEV) segment showed strong momentum. BEV wholesale sales in May reached 886,000 units, up 16.6% year-over-year, accounting for 65.7% of total NEV sales—a 3.3-percentage-point increase in market share compared to the same period last year. Currently, most mainstream BEVs offer ranges exceeding 600 kilometers. The 800V high-voltage platform has entered mass production, enabling ultra-fast charging that replenishes over 300 kilometers of range in just 10 to 15 minutes. The number of public charging piles nationwide has surpassed 5 million, with fast-charging coverage at highway service areas exceeding 98%. Charging infrastructure in tier-3 and tier-4 cities is now largely comprehensive, significantly alleviating consumer concerns about range and charging accessibility.
