Tesla has recently been granted a patent by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office titled "Vehicle Suspension Actuator System." This system employs a hybrid active suspension design that combines active motor-driven control with passive suspension components, aiming to enhance ride comfort over potholed roads while reducing energy consumption. The suspension system comprises four main components: an active actuator, passive elastic elements, adaptive dampers, and a parallel air spring. The air spring supports most of the vehicle’s static weight, allowing the active actuator to avoid continuously counteracting gravity and instead focus solely on rapidly responding to road irregularities. An electric motor adjusts the length of the suspension strut in real time via a drive belt, precisely controlling wheel movement to counteract bumps. Data is collected through onboard accelerometers and wheel position sensors, processed instantly by the suspension control system, and used to send adjustment commands to the electric motor. On typical road surfaces, minor disturbances are absorbed by the passive elastic elements and adaptive dampers; only when encountering larger irregularities—such as potholes or speed bumps—does the active actuator engage. In sections with continuous, closely spaced potholes, the system persistently raises the vehicle body; on roads with scattered, non-continuous bumps, it briefly lifts the body before returning to a low-resistance state. This design helps minimize unnecessary energy consumption, extends component lifespan, reduces ride harshness and high-frequency road noise, and delivers more precise handling feedback during cornering or acceleration.
