Porsche has filed a patent for a new powertrain system capable of supporting three operating modes—battery electric vehicles (BEVs), hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), and range-extended electric vehicles (REEVs)—within a single architecture. The design aims to address increasingly stringent emissions regulations and the growing diversification of market demands. At the heart of the patent is an internal combustion engine with a unique structure featuring two cylinder banks, each engineered with distinct internal designs and functional configurations. Combined with an electric motor and battery pack, the entire system can switch between different powertrain modes based on driving conditions. Unlike conventional cylinder deactivation technology, this engine design not only allows selective deactivation of certain cylinders under specific conditions but also equips each cylinder bank with dedicated hardware, enabling more flexible power delivery strategies. It remains unclear whether this technology will enter mass production.
