On the evening of June 29, numerous NIO vehicle owners using Apple iPhones reported widespread app crashes affecting the NIO app, rendering them unable to use the Bluetooth key feature to unlock their vehicles—leaving some stranded outside their cars. The issue primarily impacted the iOS version of the app, which crashed immediately upon launch and prevented access to the control interface; the Android version remained unaffected and functioned normally. During the outage, restarting phones proved ineffective for affected users. Some regained unlocking functionality by uninstalling and reinstalling the app. Meanwhile, vehicles failed to respond to smartphone Bluetooth keys—showing no proximity detection or lighting up when users approached. NIO’s official customer service stated that the root cause had been identified and resolved, and that an updated version of the app was being rolled out to users in phases. Affected users can resolve the crash issue by updating once they receive the update prompt. According to records, version 6.6.6 of the NIO app was released on the Apple App Store in the early hours of June 30, with release notes indicating it “fixes several known issues and optimizes certain functional experiences.”
