Tesla Rolls Out FSD V14 Lite to 4M HW3 Vehicles via Model Distillation

Tesla recently rolled out the FSD V14 Lite update (software version 2026.20.5.1) to vehicles equipped with Hardware 3 (HW3) in North America, covering approximately 4 million older Tesla models. This marks the first major functional update for the HW3 platform since FSD V13. The new version leverages model distillation technology, using the FSD V14 running on HW4 as a "teacher model" to compress and transfer its driving intelligence capabilities to HW3 hardware. This allows HW3 vehicles to indirectly benefit from the latest advancements—such as reinforcement learning and offline models—while adapting to their limited computational resources. In terms of functionality, V14 Lite improves driving responsiveness in scenarios including navigation handling, merging and lane splits, pedestrian interactions, traffic light recognition, and responses to aggressive lane changes. In everyday use, it reduces unnecessary deceleration, delivers smoother steering, and maintains more stable lane centering. Additionally, for the first time, HW3 vehicles gain automatic parking, parking cancellation, and reverse maneuvering capabilities. Users can now pre-select preferred stopping locations via the "Arrival Options" feature—including parking lots, roadside spots, private driveways, or curbside—and the speed configuration setting is now available at all times. This update remains classified as a Level 2 driver-assistance system, requiring drivers to stay fully attentive at all times. Ashok Elluswamy, Tesla’s VP of AI, emphasized this point when confirming the rollout on social media. Separately, reports indicate that Tesla is developing a hardware upgrade solution codenamed “AI4” or “AI4-plus,” which may eventually offer physical retrofitting services for HW3 owners. The V14 Lite update is seen as an interim solution ahead of this potential hardware upgrade.
