China's auto market is undergoing a structural transformation, with competitive focus shifting from scale expansion to precise market positioning. Over the past two years, price wars in mainstream family sedans and SUVs have squeezed industry profit margins, while niche segments such as rugged off-road vehicles and premium MPVs have shown growth momentum. The rugged off-road vehicle segment has expanded from approximately 500,000 units several years ago to nearly 900,000 units projected for 2025, with domestic brands capturing 70% of the market share. Tank once held nearly half of this segment’s market share, but its sales dropped to 77,000 units in the first five months of 2026, reducing its share to around 30%. During the same period, Fangchengbao surpassed Tank in retail volume for the first time. New entrants like the HiCar G9 and M-Hero M817 are accelerating their entry into the market: the former positions itself as a luxury tech-oriented rugged SUV, featuring an 800V high-voltage platform, full-domain electric four-wheel drive, and Huawei’s Qiankun ADS 5 advanced intelligent driving system; the latter starts at RMB 299,900 and integrates Huawei’s full-stack smart solution, enhancing off-road ADAS capabilities on unpaved roads. The premium MPV segment is also witnessing a wave of new product launches. Leapmotor’s D99 targets the RMB 250,000–300,000 family MPV segment, while Zunjie V680 opens pre-sales at RMB 650,000–900,000, and Zunjie V800 aims squarely at the ultra-luxury market priced between RMB 800,000 and 1.2 million. Although premium MPV sales reached 205,000 units in 2023 (up from 56,000 in 2022), annual sales in both 2024 and 2025 remained below 250,000 units, indicating slowing growth. In May 2026, ten out of the top 15 best-selling MPVs posted year-over-year declines, with four models seeing drops exceeding 50%. Automakers are pivoting toward these high-margin niches based on three strategic rationales: first, premium MPVs command higher pricing power than SUVs in comparable segments; second, flagship MPVs can help break through brand ceilings; third, new energy and intelligent technologies enable better space utilization, improved energy efficiency, and enhanced cabin experiences in MPVs. For instance, Leapmotor emphasizes that the D99’s third-row practicality surpasses that of large SUVs, highlighting the irreplaceable advantages of MPVs in fully loaded travel scenarios. Currently, both the rugged off-road and premium MPV segments have transitioned from growth-driven competition to a zero-sum game. Product definitions now rely less on traditional mechanical performance and more on intelligence, comfort, and all-scenario adaptability as key differentiators. Tech companies like Huawei are deeply involved in vehicle development through full-stack technology solutions, driving the evolution of off-road vehicles from specialized tools to everyday transportation. Overall, as price wars in the mass market approach the profitability threshold, automakers collectively view high-barrier, high-value niches as a strategic imperative. However, supply growth has clearly outpaced demand expansion, and future competitiveness will hinge on integrated capabilities in user insight, technological integration, and brand building.
