Chinese automakers' global expansion has evolved from exporting products to engaging in systematic, holistic competition. Leveraging its status as an international hub, mature legal system, robust financial ecosystem, and strategic geographical location, Hong Kong has become a crucial platform for mainland Chinese automakers to expand into overseas markets and manage cross-border operational risks. On June 18, the 2026 International Auto & Supply Chain Expo (Hong Kong) hosted the "Engine Going Global: Empowered by Hong Kong" forum on global automotive supply chain strategies, bringing together representatives from government, industry, commerce, legal, and financial sectors to discuss emerging trends in the globalization of the automotive industry. Currently, electrification and intelligent technologies are reshaping the global automotive landscape. As Chinese automakers export vehicles and components overseas, they face mounting challenges—including trade barriers, data security concerns, currency fluctuations, and regulatory compliance—prompting a strategic shift toward building long-term operational capabilities abroad. Against this backdrop, Hong Kong plays multiple pivotal roles: connecting global capital through its financial system, bridging international regulatory frameworks via its legal and professional services, and supporting enterprises’ overseas market entry through its extensive international networks. Amid the ongoing restructuring of global industrial order and regulatory gaps arising from cross-sector integration, Hong Kong now stands at a strategic window of opportunity. By establishing regulatory sandboxes, developing rule frameworks, and exporting standards, Hong Kong can facilitate the transformation of “Hong Kong standards” into “international standards.” As Chinese automakers advance from product- and system-level competition toward competing through participation in global rule-making, Hong Kong—as a critical connectivity node—is playing an increasingly deep and indispensable role in supporting the globalization of China’s automotive industry.
