General Motors and Micron Technology announced on July 1 a long-term supply agreement under which Micron will provide memory and storage chip platforms for GM’s vehicle production. Under the agreement, GM will secure a stable supply of memory and storage chips, and the two companies will jointly develop next-generation technologies in this domain. GM stated that this collaboration is a proactive measure to secure critical components in its supply chain and is not in response to any current production disruptions. Micron noted that its expanding U.S.-based manufacturing capacity—including its recently upgraded memory chip facility in Virginia—will support this partnership. Micron revealed that this agreement is one of 16 strategic customer supply deals it has previously disclosed. In recent years, surging demand for memory chips—driven by massive investments in AI data centers—has tightened supply across the industry and pushed prices steadily higher. According to S&P Global Mobility, DRAM memory chip prices have risen approximately 70% cumulatively since last December. As advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) and high-performance in-vehicle infotainment systems become increasingly common in automobiles, memory chips have emerged as critical components in vehicle manufacturing.
