Musk: NVIDIA's Self-Driving Tech Won't Challenge Tesla FSD in 5–6 Years

Tesla CEO Elon Musk recently responded to NVIDIA's Alpamayo autonomous driving system unveiled at CES 2026, stating it would be unlikely to pose a substantial competitive threat to Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) system within the next five to six years. He emphasized that achieving truly safe and reliable autonomous driving requires solving the "long-tail distribution" problem—handling a vast array of rare and complex scenarios—and noted that FSD still needs several more years to evolve from being merely functional to significantly outperforming human drivers. In response, NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang described FSD as "world-class" and reiterated that NVIDIA focuses on providing a technology platform rather than manufacturing complete vehicles. Meanwhile, Tesla is accelerating its Robotaxi rollout, having launched data-collection hiring initiatives in 20 countries. In China, the company has upgraded the Model Y’s center display to a 16-inch 2K screen without increasing the vehicle’s price, aligning with local market demand for high-resolution displays.
