At the Detroit Auto Show, Ford CEO Jim Farley stated that the company is focusing on learning advanced Formula 1 hybrid powertrain control software and high-discharge battery technologies through its technical collaboration with the Red Bull F1 team. He emphasized that the technological value of modern F1 no longer lies in traditional internal combustion engines but in its highly sophisticated hybrid systems—race cars now run on electric power for approximately 50% of a race, and the upcoming 2026 power unit will deliver 470 horsepower from its electric component alone. Ford plans to apply these technologies to future performance-oriented hybrids, commercial work vehicles, and plug-in hybrid models featuring vehicle-to-load (V2L) external power capabilities. Facing weaker-than-expected EV sales and profitability pressures, Ford has adjusted its strategy to expand its hybrid lineup, aiming for hybrids, range-extended electric vehicles, and battery-electric vehicles to collectively account for half of its global sales by 2030. Beyond battery and software expertise, Ford also expects to leverage F1-derived aerodynamic advancements to enhance the efficiency of production models such as the Transit van.
