As a winter storm hits, a viral social media video promoting the use of WD-40 to prevent car doors and locks from freezing has garnered over 6.8 million views. The creator suggests spraying WD-40 into door locks and onto latches to create a water-repellent barrier that prevents ice formation. Supporters claim it works because WD-40 has “water-displacing” properties that stop ice and snow from sticking. However, locksmiths and online users have issued warnings: WD-40 can thicken or even solidify in cold temperatures, potentially causing locks to seize up. They recommend using Teflon-based lubricants instead. Other users have shared alternative methods, such as applying petroleum jelly to weatherstripping or covering side mirrors with shower caps to prevent icing. Experts advise that if WD-40 is used, it should first be sprayed onto a cloth and then wiped onto surfaces—never applied directly—and that treatment should be done before temperatures drop.
