BMW has recently been granted a new patent aimed at addressing the issue of accidental touches during blind operation of large in-car displays. The design incorporates a "touch-sensitive strip" just a few millimeters high along the bottom or side of the screen, which neither obstructs the display nor serves as a physical reference point for the driver's fingers. The surface of this strip features indentations aligned with virtual buttons, mimicking the tactile feel of traditional physical keys to help drivers accurately locate functional areas by touch alone. Additionally, the system integrates a multimodal confirmation mechanism combining haptic vibration, audible cues, and visual feedback to ensure immediate response upon successful input, thereby reducing driver distraction caused by unintended touches or uncertainty and enhancing overall driving safety.
