Eric Gordon, a professor at the University of Michigan's Ross School of Business, recently warned that if Ford and General Motors continue losing market share in Canada, Mexico, and other overseas markets where they once held dominant positions, they could gradually become niche automakers. He noted that the two automakers might eventually focus solely on large pickup trucks and SUVs—vehicles popular in the U.S. but with limited sales in most global markets. Gordon predicts their business focus could ultimately shrink to serving only U.S.-based consumers who prefer large SUVs and pickups, significantly diminishing their overall market influence.
