A U.S. owner of a 2013 Tesla Model S recently posted on Reddit that after visiting a service center due to a battery failure, they were quoted $13,830 (approximately RMB 96,500) to replace the original 60 kWh battery—of which the battery itself accounted for $13,250. If opting to upgrade to a 90 kWh battery, the total cost would soar to $23,262 (about RMB 162,000), including the battery, software unlock fee, and installation. Currently, the resale value of a Model S from that year in the U.S. used-car market ranges only between $10,000 and $15,000, meaning the battery replacement cost far exceeds the vehicle’s residual value. The incident has sparked widespread discussion among Tesla owners, highlighting the exorbitant costs of repairing electric vehicles’ core "three-electric" systems (battery, motor, and electronics) once warranties expire.
