In 2025, BYD registered 187,657 new vehicles in the European market, a surge of 268.6% year-over-year; within the EU, registrations rose by 227.8% compared to 2024, with its market share increasing from 0.4% to 1.2%. Although BYD’s sales still lag behind Tesla—which sold 238,656 vehicles in Europe in 2025, down 27% year-over-year—BYD has emerged as a strong competitor to Tesla and established local brands like Volkswagen and Renault, thanks to its affordable battery-electric models and robust plug-in hybrid lineup. Meanwhile, the EU’s new energy vehicle (NEV) penetration rate continued to rise: battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) accounted for 17.4% of the market, while hybrids remained consumers’ top choice at 34.5%, pushing the combined share of internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles down to 35.5%. In December 2025, monthly BEV registrations in the EU surpassed those of gasoline-powered cars for the first time, marking an acceleration in the region’s electrification transition.
