The European electric vehicle (EV) market landscape underwent dramatic changes in 2025. According to data from the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association, Tesla’s new vehicle registrations across the EU, the UK, and neighboring markets fell by 26.9% year-over-year to 238,656 units, with its market share in the EU dropping from 2.3% to 1.4%. In contrast, BYD’s sales surged by 268.6% during the same period, reaching 187,657 units, and its market share jumped from 0.4% to 1.4%. Overall, battery-electric vehicles accounted for 17.4% of new car sales in the EU in 2025, a significant increase from 13.6% in 2024. In December alone, BEV registrations rose by 51% year-over-year, plug-in hybrids grew by 36.7%, while the share of internal combustion engine vehicles continued to shrink.
