Toyota has retained its position as the world's top-selling automaker for the sixth consecutive year. In 2025, Toyota (including Daihatsu and Hino) recorded global sales of 11,322,575 vehicles, up 4.6% year-over-year, and production of 11,221,960 units, an increase of 5.7%. During the same period, Volkswagen Group delivered 8,983,900 vehicles globally, a slight decline of 0.5% year-over-year, widening the gap between the two automakers to approximately 2.3 million units. In the Chinese market, Toyota’s 2025 sales surpassed 1.78 million units, making it the only Japanese brand to achieve positive growth. Meanwhile, Volkswagen’s deliveries in China fell 8% year-over-year to 2.69 million units, marking its second consecutive annual decline. At the same time, Chinese automakers are rapidly rising: BYD sold 4.6 million vehicles in 2025, with its pure electric vehicle sales growing by 27.86%; Geely reported sales of 4.116 million units, up 26% year-over-year—a record high—and aims to break into the global top five by 2030.
