Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced during the company's latest earnings call that Tesla plans to officially discontinue production of the Model S and Model X in the second quarter of 2026, repurposing their production lines for mass manufacturing of the humanoid robot Optimus. Musk stated that these two flagship models have reached the end of their product life cycles, while Optimus has the potential to become Tesla’s highest-volume product ever. Optimus was first unveiled at Tesla’s AI Day in 2021 (initially shown only as a static figure) and demonstrated a mobile prototype named “Bumblebee” in 2022. This move marks Tesla’s strategic shift from being primarily an automaker toward a broader focus on artificial intelligence and robotics technologies. Going forward, the company will concentrate its resources on advancing Optimus development and scaling up production.
