Faced with the surge in car thefts across the United States, a new owner of a Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 immediately installed an "immobilizer"—a theft-deterrent device that disables the vehicle’s ignition or fuel system—right after taking delivery of her car. She posted a demonstration video on social media showing the device: a small white tube located on the driver’s side floor. When the plug at the top is removed, the car cannot start at all; reinserting it allows normal ignition. She emphasized that modern car theft techniques have become increasingly sophisticated, including relay attacks and hacking into vehicle systems, and that physical-layer anti-theft devices like hers can effectively prevent unauthorized starts. Her product is from Ravelco, whose manufacturer claims the device has never been compromised. Each unit features a unique plug and unmarked wiring, significantly increasing the difficulty of bypassing it. The U.S. Department of Justice also notes that vehicles equipped with immobilizer systems are significantly less likely to be stolen. She urges all owners of high-performance or high-value vehicles to install such devices without delay.
