A mechanic shared his experience on TikTok: he removed a customer’s engine and began a repair job estimated to take 16 hours—without first obtaining the customer’s written authorization. The customer later refused to proceed with the repairs. The video sparked heated online debate, with most commenters questioning, “Why start work without a signed repair order?” Under the laws of most states, including California and Texas, auto shops are required to provide a written estimate and obtain customer consent before beginning repairs; otherwise, customers have the right to refuse payment. Experts advise that in similar disputes, customers should first try to negotiate with the shop to retrieve their vehicle and, if necessary, file a complaint with consumer protection agencies or the Better Business Bureau (BBB). The mechanic has not yet responded to media inquiries.
