A Texas man’s brand-new BMW X5—owned for less than six weeks—is already covered in countless stone chips, with even the windshield showing cracks. Matthew Jones, a technician at a local paint protection film (PPF) installation shop, explained that due to Texas’s low rainfall, dust and road debris accumulate on highways for extended periods, making vehicles highly susceptible to damage from stones kicked up by preceding cars. Modern vehicles commonly use thinner, water-based eco-friendly paint, which offers reduced resistance to damage—meaning this issue affects all makes and models, regardless of brand or price. The most vulnerable areas include the front bumper, hood, side mirrors, and lower edges of the doors. Experts recommend installing transparent paint protection film (PPF) on the very day a new car is delivered to safeguard the paintwork and maintain resale value.
