The Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, recently announced that its self-developed aluminum-based lithium-ion battery—capable of operating across an ultra-wide temperature range—has successfully completed full-vehicle testing under extreme cold conditions in Heihe, Heilongjiang Province. For the first time, this battery was integrated into a mass-produced all-electric vehicle from a leading domestic new energy automaker. After being soaked in a -25°C environment for over 24 hours, the vehicle demonstrated a discharge efficiency exceeding 92% under urban driving conditions and achieved low-temperature fast charging—reaching 90% state of charge in just 20 minutes. This breakthrough technology leverages an innovative aluminum-based anode material, expanding the battery’s operational temperature range to -70°C to 80°C, specifically addressing the severe performance degradation of conventional lithium-ion batteries in cold conditions. Developed over nearly a decade, the project has been selected as an Outstanding Case of Patent Commercialization by the China National Intellectual Property Administration for 2025 and is already being applied in fields such as smart grid monitoring and clean energy storage in northern China.
