The legal battle between the Trump administration and California over vehicle emissions regulations is intensifying. California is challenging congressional Republicans' efforts to revoke its federal waiver that allows the state to set its own, stricter emissions standards. If California prevails, U.S. automakers would be forced to comply with two starkly different regulatory regimes: one favoring gasoline-powered vehicles and restricting electric vehicle development under the Trump administration, and another—adopted by California and 11 other states—that enforces stringent electric vehicle mandates and emissions reduction requirements. This regulatory split is creating significant compliance costs and financial uncertainty for both electric vehicle manufacturers like Tesla and companies reliant on traditional internal combustion engine vehicles.
