A Reddit user recently posted that their 2009 Toyota Yaris suddenly failed to start just nine months after installing a new battery. Upon inspection, they found the positive terminal heavily coated with white and green corrosion—damage typically seen only after several years. Commenters and mechanics widely agreed that such rapid corrosion is highly unusual and likely points to an issue with the vehicle’s charging system, such as a faulty voltage regulator causing overcharging or the use of a low-quality battery. Others suggested that frequent short trips or parasitic electrical drain could also exacerbate the problem. Experts advised getting the battery and alternator tested immediately at stores like AutoZone, where warranty replacement may be available if a defect is confirmed. When cleaning corrosion, they recommended using baking soda instead of cola, as sugary residues from cola could attract rodents that might chew through wiring. Without addressing the root cause, the corrosion will quickly return.
