2026 is seen as the inaugural year for the large-scale commercialization of sodium-ion batteries, with the polyanionic cathode technology rapidly overtaking the previously dominant layered oxide route. Thanks to advantages such as lower cost, higher safety, longer cycle life, and better low-temperature performance, polyanionic materials are gaining favor in cost-sensitive applications like energy storage. Starting in the second half of 2025, shipments of polyanionic cathode materials surged dramatically—global shipments reached 14,000 metric tons, a year-over-year increase of over 360%, accounting for approximately 70% of total sodium-ion cathode material shipments. Multiple companies are accelerating their investments: Zhongna Energy, Jianeng Energy, Ina New Energy, and Shandong Nayuan (a subsidiary of Longpan Tech) have all commenced production or expanded capacity for polyanionic cathode materials. Although layered oxides still hold an edge in fast-charging applications, the two technologies are now forming a complementary landscape tailored to different use cases. In 2026, polyanionic sodium-ion batteries are expected to drive broader adoption of sodium-ion technology across multiple sectors, supporting China’s “dual carbon” goals.
