Chinese electric heavy-duty trucks are rapidly entering the European market. Companies such as BYD, Geely, Sany Heavy Industry, Sinotruk, WeDrive Technologies, and Superpower Dynamics have already launched multiple models, with some scheduled for delivery this year. Priced at approximately $266,000, these trucks are about 30% cheaper than the average European electric heavy-duty truck, which costs around $380,000. Although still significantly more expensive than diesel-powered heavy trucks (priced at $115,000), Chinese electric models offer substantially lower per-kilometer operating costs and better total cost of ownership over their lifecycle, making them highly attractive. Data shows that by 2025, zero-emission heavy-duty trucks will account for 29% of China’s heavy-truck sales—far surpassing Europe’s projected 4.2%. Moreover, Chinese automakers achieve development cycles of just three years, compared to seven years in Europe. The Secretary General of the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association has warned that if Europe fails to respond promptly, Chinese manufacturers could dominate the market within one or two years. Volvo’s CEO has also praised Chinese companies as “fast, innovative, and decisive.” Meanwhile, Tesla plans to begin mass production of its Semi truck in 2026, entering the competitive arena.
