In 2025, Ford initiated 153 recalls in the United States, affecting approximately 13 million vehicles—more than the combined total of the next five largest automakers, including Toyota and General Motors, making it the industry leader in recall volume. In the first two months of 2026 alone, Ford has already recalled over 7.3 million additional vehicles, putting it on track to set another annual record. The primary causes of these recalls include defective fuel injectors, malfunctioning rearview cameras, and software issues. One recall alone cost the company $570 million, and Ford was fined an additional $165 million for delays in addressing the defect. Although Ford launched a new quality initiative called “Extreme Testing” in 2024, its impact has yet to materialize. Industry analysts note that increasing vehicle complexity and the transition toward electrification are amplifying recall risks, with Ford’s plug-in hybrid and fully electric models exhibiting higher defect rates. Experts argue that the critical challenge now lies not in isolated quality issues, but in developing a systematic capability to manage recalls effectively.
