At the launch event for the new-generation i3, BMW product chief Bernd Körber addressed questions about whether the company would introduce a fully electric sports car. He stated that BMW has always kept a close eye on the sports car segment and that pure-electric technology "has its place" within it, though no related production model will be launched in the near term—though it remains "not impossible" in the future. Currently, BMW is advancing development of an all-electric M3 based on the new-generation platform and may simultaneously unveil an M4 coupe variant. However, both models are still classified as high-performance sedans and differ from traditional two-door sports cars in positioning. Although BMW showcased a new-generation two-door prototype in 2024 featuring an 800V architecture capable of supporting a quad-motor system delivering up to 1,341 horsepower, a production plan has yet to be confirmed. The company emphasized that it has not ruled out the possibility of an all-electric sports car.
