China's first automotive testing facility simulating overseas high-altitude environments has recently been put into operation in Kunming, Yunnan Province. Located at an elevation of nearly 2,000 meters, the test site features a high-altitude dynamic plaza, straight performance track, "Mexican Road," acceleration noise road, and gradient ramps, enabling simulation of road conditions found in high-altitude regions across South America, Central Asia, the Middle East, and East Africa. Among its specialized surfaces, the "Mexican Road" includes multiple complex road types such as a 4-centimeter-thick high-intensity cobblestone section, upward convex speed humps, and downward concave speed bumps. According to engineers from China Automotive Technology & Research Center specializing in high-altitude testing, one particularly notable feature is a 25-centimeter-high short-wave upward convex speed hump shaped like a semi-cylinder, designed to replicate mandatory speed-reducing infrastructure commonly installed in Mexico due to high vehicle speeds. The completion of this testing facility allows domestically produced vehicles to undergo equivalent high-altitude environmental testing without leaving China, helping automakers better meet export market requirements, shorten development cycles, and reduce testing costs. According to official data, in March 2024, China produced 2.917 million vehicles and sold 2.899 million units, representing month-on-month increases of 74.4% and 60.6%, respectively. Vehicle exports reached 875,000 units that month, up 30.2% month-on-month and 72.7% year-on-year, including 371,000 new energy vehicles (NEVs), which surged by 130% year-on-year. In the first quarter of 2024, total vehicle exports amounted to 2.226 million units, a 56.7% year-on-year increase, with NEV exports totaling 954,000 units, more than doubling (up 120%) compared to the same period last year.
