A mechanic in Yuma, Arizona, diagnosed a 2023 GMC Sierra Denali with a seized engine and initially quoted the customer approximately $11,000 for a new diesel engine, including labor and fluids. The customer approved the repair. Before starting the work, the mechanic checked the vehicle’s mileage—22,000 miles—and suspected it might still be under the manufacturer’s warranty. He contacted the dealership, confirmed the warranty was active using the VIN, and advised the customer to take the truck to the dealership for a no-cost engine replacement. The customer followed his advice, and the vehicle was towed to the dealer for warranty-covered repairs. The mechanic said he voluntarily gave up the potential $11,000 in revenue but emphasized that earning the customer’s long-term trust was more important.
