Nissan CEO Ivan Espinosa stated that Infiniti's declining sales in recent years stemmed from several strategic missteps, including developing a dedicated platform for the brand and setting an unrealistic annual sales target of 8 million units. He noted that these moves made it difficult for the company to sustain resource investment amid overall poor business performance. Espinosa believes Infiniti does not need its own independent platform and should instead differentiate its products through technology features, design distinctions, and user experience. To revitalize the brand, Infiniti plans to expand its lineup to seven models by adding four new vehicles: three hybrid SUVs (including one midsize SUV and two body-on-frame SUVs) and a high-performance rear-wheel-drive sedan based on the Nissan Skyline, equipped with a twin-turbo V6 engine and a manual transmission. The new models will primarily be developed using Nissan’s existing product architecture, sharing powertrains and platforms. This approach aligns with Nissan’s “Re:Nissan” plan announced in May 2023, which aims to reduce the number of vehicle platforms to seven by 2035.
