A Hangzhou electric vehicle owner drove over pavement tiles in a parking lot, causing a plastic clip on the battery pack housing to break. Since this clip is integrated into the battery enclosure as a single unit, the manufacturer refused to perform a partial repair, citing irreversible loss of IP68-rated sealing integrity and the pack’s monolithic design. The manufacturer insisted on replacing the entire battery pack at a quoted cost of approximately RMB 130,000—nearly half the vehicle’s original purchase price. The insurer declined to cover the full replacement cost, arguing that the battery pack itself sustained no functional damage and that the replacement expense was excessive. As the manufacturer rejected alternative repair options, the vehicle was ultimately declared a total loss. The insurer compensated the owner only based on the car’s actual cash value, excluding reimbursement for nearly RMB 10,000 worth of aftermarket additions, such as window tinting, installed by the owner.
