During Tesla's Q1 2026 earnings call, CEO Elon Musk announced another delay in the unveiling of the Roadster, stating it would likely be pushed back by "about a month"—potentially to late May or June 2026. The vehicle had previously been scheduled for reveal in late April 2026, following an earlier target date of April 1, 2026, for its demonstration. Since the prototype’s initial debut in November 2017, the Roadster’s launch timeline has been revised at least eight times. Originally promised for production in 2020, the schedule has seen repeated postponements: in July 2020, delivery was delayed by 12–18 months; in January 2021, it was rescheduled for 2022; in September 2021, pushed further to 2023; in May 2023, moved to 2024; in February 2024, Tesla pledged a late-2024 unveiling with deliveries starting in early 2025; by Q3 2024, the company acknowledged mass production would slip to 2025–2026; and at the November 2025 shareholder meeting, Tesla set April 1, 2026, as the new demo date, with mass production expected to begin 12–18 months afterward—implying deliveries wouldn’t start until as early as 2027 or even 2028. This latest delay is attributed to “extensive testing and validation required to ensure a successful demonstration,” differing from past explanations that cited higher priorities for projects like Cybertruck, Semi, and Optimus. Originally unveiled specs for the Roadster included a 200 kWh battery pack, 998 km (620 miles) of range, 0–96 km/h (0–60 mph) acceleration in 1.9 seconds, a top speed exceeding 402 km/h (250 mph), and a starting price of $200,000. Musk later suggested accelerating performance could be improved to under one second and proposed adding optional SpaceX cold-gas thrusters. Since 2017, thousands of customers have placed deposits for the vehicle. The Founders Series required a commitment of $250,000, while the standard version started at a $50,000 reservation price with an initial deposit of $5,000. Some customers have now waited nearly a decade without seeing a production model.
