Starting May 6, 2024, BYD has abolished its policy of providing free charging for new energy vehicles (NEVs) to employees across all its campuses nationwide. The company has begun implementing a fee-based system for AC charging stations, DC charging stations, and flash chargers. The new charging fees consist of two components: electricity charges based on local commercial and industrial time-of-use (peak-valley) tariffs published by the grid operator, plus a fixed service fee of RMB 0.10 per kilowatt-hour. This adjustment applies specifically to BYD-branded NEVs driven by employees. Non-BYD vehicles were generally not permitted to park on campus previously, so the policy primarily affects employees who drive their own BYD-brand vehicles. BYD stated that the change aims to optimize the allocation of charging resources on campus, improve utilization efficiency, and ensure the long-term stable operation of charging infrastructure. Previously, BYD employees who purchased the company’s NEVs enjoyed free on-campus charging along with monthly purchase subsidies ranging from several hundred to several thousand yuan. This policy shift marks the official end of that longstanding employee benefit.
