According to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology's (MIIT) 407th batch of new vehicle catalog, two new models—the Aito M9 Ultimate and the Yijing X9—feature significantly increased dimensions. The Aito M9 Ultimate measures 5,402 mm in length, 2,026 mm in width, and 1,845 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,236 mm. The Yijing X9 is 5,301 mm long, 2,015 mm wide, and 1,805 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 3,120 mm. All four flagship SUVs scheduled for launch in May exceed 5 meters in length and 3 meters in wheelbase. The current new energy vehicle (NEV) market is witnessing a widespread trend toward larger vehicle dimensions. Data shows that from 2023 to 2025, NEV compact (A-segment) sedans typically range from 4.6 to 4.8 meters in length, with wheelbases exceeding 2.8 meters, and are 5 to 10 centimeters wider than their internal combustion engine counterparts in the same class. In targeting the premium family market, automakers are not only emphasizing powertrain performance, range, and intelligent cabins but also leveraging larger body sizes to enhance interior spaciousness and project a flagship image. However, parking space standards in urban residential communities still follow the 2015 regulations, which specify a minimum clear width of 2.4 meters and a total length of 5.3 meters for perpendicular parking spaces. At that time, mainstream passenger cars were approximately 1.8 meters wide and no longer than 4.8 meters. Today’s larger SUVs often cannot fit comfortably within these existing spaces—even when technically compliant with dimensional standards, some models still struggle to park legally and practically. In real-world usage, when large vehicles occupy adjacent spots, the middle parking space frequently becomes too narrow for occupants to enter or exit the vehicle normally—a phenomenon commonly referred to as the “death parking spot.” Although some vehicles are equipped with automated parking assist systems, these features often fail in tight spaces. As a result, some owners resort to parking in fire lanes, obstructing emergency access and creating safety hazards. Moreover, large SUVs face significant challenges navigating underground parking garages due to their extended length and larger turning radius, often scraping walls or encroaching on driving lanes during turns or U-turns. Automakers’ emphasis on increasing vehicle size as a differentiation strategy stems from intensifying market competition amid growing homogenization of NEV technologies. Prospective buyers are advised to measure their residential parking spaces in person before purchasing to avoid daily usability issues.
