On April 13, Austria's Ministry of Transport released data showing that the country registered 8,206 electric vehicles (EVs) in March 2024—a nearly one-third year-on-year increase—setting a new record high. During the same period, international oil prices have surged by more than 40% since the outbreak of conflict in the Middle East. Despite measures taken by the Austrian government to alleviate the pressure from rising fuel costs, EV sales have still risen significantly. Several automakers have recently launched fully electric models priced below €25,000, including BYD, Stellantis, and Volkswagen, with notable improvements in charging speed and driving range compared to previous generations. Meanwhile, data from Germany’s used-car platform mobile.de shows that searches for second-hand EVs during the first 18 days of March were about three times higher than before. China also reported a record-breaking doubling of its exports of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles in March. Austria’s Minister of Transport, Peter Hanke, stated that given the impact of the Middle East crisis on energy markets, it is essential to reduce dependence on oil-producing countries and accelerate the adoption of renewable energy and electric mobility.
