On May 11, 2024, Chery Automobile announced the establishment of a joint venture with Japanese automotive aftermarket company Autobacs and several other companies, planning to begin sales of China-made battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in Japan starting in 2027. Other partners in the collaboration include Jiangsu Yueda Automotive Group, battery manufacturer Gotion High-Tech, and Japanese painting equipment company Anest Iwata. The parties have already set up the joint venture in Singapore and will launch a new EV brand through their Yokohama-based development and sales company, EMT, promoting it with a Japan-inspired brand image. EMT will be responsible for developing vehicle models tailored to Japanese market demands and has already recruited technical personnel from automakers such as Honda and Mazda. Chery stated that it is merely one of multiple investors in the EMT project and will not be involved in the company’s management or operations.
