Toyota Motor Corporation announced plans to build a new vehicle assembly plant in the Bidkin Industrial Area of Maharashtra state in western India. The facility is scheduled to commence operations in the first half of 2029, with an initial annual production capacity of 100,000 units, primarily manufacturing a new SUV model. The plant will be operated by Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM), Toyota’s joint venture in India, and is expected to employ approximately 2,800 workers at launch—mostly hired locally—covering full manufacturing processes including stamping, welding, painting, and assembly. Currently, TKM operates two vehicle plants in Karnataka state in southern India, with a third under construction and expected to become operational within 2026. Once completed, the three Karnataka plants will have a combined annual capacity of around 400,000 vehicles. Additionally, Toyota plans to construct three new vehicle plants in India in total, aiming to increase its local annual production capacity to one million units by 2030, with a total investment of approximately JPY 300 billion. The newly announced Maharashtra plant will be the first of these three new facilities, with the remaining two expected to come online progressively during the 2030s. Toyota has not yet disclosed specific details regarding the vehicle model name or further investment specifics.
