BMW has confirmed that its first all-electric M3 will make its global debut in early 2027 and is scheduled to enter production in March 2026. Internally codenamed ZA0, this model marks the first time in the M3 lineage that no internal combustion engine will be offered. Multiple prototypes are currently undergoing testing at the Nürburgring, already fitted with near-production body kits. Despite camouflage wrap, their widened wheel arches and more aggressive stance are clearly discernible. All test vehicles feature an all-wheel-drive system with a four-motor layout and come standard with BMW’s xDrive system, though they offer the ability to deactivate the front axle motors, enabling rear-wheel-drive operation to preserve the driving dynamics of the current G80 M3. Rumors suggest the car will deliver a combined output between 800 and 900 horsepower, pack a battery exceeding 100 kWh, and weigh significantly more than the current M3 Competition xDrive model. BMW has not yet released specific performance figures but has explicitly stated that the electric M3 will lack traditional exhaust sound. For enthusiasts who prefer combustion power, the next-generation gasoline-powered M3 (codenamed G84) is expected to launch in 2028, featuring all-wheel drive across the board and eliminating the manual transmission option entirely. Additionally, BMW has previously hinted at an i3 Touring variant, and a high-performance M Touring version (internally codenamed ZA1) is also expected to arrive before the end of this decade.
