Honda has officially abandoned its previously announced goal of selling only battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and fuel cell vehicles (FCVs) by 2040. CEO Toshihiro Mibe stated that, given the current uncertainties in the business environment and consumer demand shifting more than anticipated, achieving 100% electrification within the remaining 14 years is "unrealistic," prompting the company to withdraw the target. The original target was first unveiled in April 2021, when Honda pledged to cease sales of internal combustion engine vehicles by 2040. However, as the global EV market’s growth has fallen short of early expectations, several automakers have begun revising their electrification strategies. Although Honda is stepping back from its full-electrification timeline, it remains committed to its long-term goal of achieving carbon neutrality by mid-century. As an interim measure, the company will prioritize developing next-generation hybrid electric vehicles and plans to launch 15 new hybrid models by March 2030.
