Honda has recently adjusted its electrification strategy, pausing multiple battery-electric vehicle (BEV) projects and shifting its focus toward hybrid-electric technology. During its latest business briefing, Honda unveiled two near-production prototype vehicles: a sedan featuring a wedge-shaped body and a pronounced fastback design, and an Acura SUV incorporating design cues from the RSX. Both models are equipped with Honda’s next-generation hybrid powertrain, which delivers over 10% greater efficiency compared to the company’s 2023 technology. The vehicles are scheduled to launch in 2028 and will be introduced simultaneously in the North American market, featuring orange side turn signals to comply with U.S. regulations. Honda plans to roll out 15 new models equipped with this hybrid system by March 2030, with SUVs forming the core of the lineup. All-wheel drive will be achieved through electric motors. To support this strategic shift, the company is developing a dedicated platform that reduces development costs by more than 30% through weight reduction. Starting in 2027, Honda’s new hybrid models will feature powertrains with globally leading energy efficiency. Over the next three years, Honda will invest ¥4.4 trillion in the development of internal combustion engine and hybrid vehicles, while maintaining cautious investment in pure electric vehicles, with approximately ¥0.8 trillion already reserved for future BEV projects. Both Honda and Acura brands will aggressively launch new hybrid models to fill the product gap left by the cancellation of several previously planned electric vehicles.
