A test drive report released on May 15 revealed a significant difference in the intelligent driver-assistance capabilities of Mercedes-Benz’s new-generation S-Class between the Chinese and European markets. Despite identical hardware configurations—both versions feature 10 external cameras, 5 millimeter-wave radars, 12 ultrasonic sensors, and run on the MB.OS operating system powered by NVIDIA’s high-performance computing platform—their functional performance differs markedly. The European version supports only basic advanced driver-assistance features such as adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist. It is prone to interference in complex traffic scenarios and cannot autonomously handle decisions related to specific local traffic rules, leading observers to describe it as “unfinished.” In contrast, the Chinese version integrates a localized intelligent driving solution provided by Momenta, demonstrating strong adaptability and autonomous decision-making capabilities in complex urban environments like Beijing’s Sanlitun area, requiring almost no human intervention. This divergence stems from Mercedes-Benz’s strategic shift in its intelligent driving approach—from a globally uniform technical roadmap to a “global platform + regional localization” model. China has now become a core hub for the company’s global intelligent driving R&D. Meanwhile, regulatory progress on intelligent driving in Europe remains slow; a legal framework for L2++ point-to-point assisted driving is not expected until at least 2027 and will not directly adopt China’s technical solutions. Divergent regulatory environments and technological pathways are further widening the gap in intelligent driving experiences between the two regions.
