On May 15, Tesla updated the usage rules for its Full Self-Driving (FSD) software, requiring drivers to provide feedback explaining why they took manual control of the vehicle. The updated user interface now displays a pop-up window prompting drivers to select one of four categories: personal preference, uncomfortable experience, navigation issue, or critical issue. Alternatively, drivers can record voice feedback using the microphone on the steering wheel. Unlike previous versions, where the pop-up automatically disappeared after a few seconds, the new version keeps the prompt visible until the driver either makes a selection or submits a voice note. Tesla did not provide a detailed explanation for this change through official channels, only briefly mentioning it in the software update release notes. Users can quickly dismiss the pop-up by double-tapping the microphone button, which automatically sends a blank audio clip as feedback. Some owners have expressed concerns that mandating feedback during urgent takeover situations could distract drivers and compromise safety. Industry analysts suggest Tesla’s move aims to collect structured data to refine training for its FSD AI models, enhancing the system’s ability to recognize and respond to complex driving scenarios.
