Volkswagen officially unveiled the ID.Polo GTI on May 15, 2024, during the Nürburgring 24 Hours endurance race—marking the first time the GTI badge has been applied to a fully electric model. The launch coincides with the 50th anniversary of the original Golf GTI. Based on the all-electric Polo, the ID.Polo GTI retains the standard model’s design language while enhancing its sporty character. It features redesigned front and rear bumpers, a split rear spoiler, GTI-specific vertical daytime running lights, red accents beneath the matrix LED headlights, and an illuminated full-width light bar across the front fascia. Standard equipment includes two-tone 19-inch alloy wheels, with red GTI badges adorning the wheel centers, ahead of the rear wheels, and on the tailgate. The ID.Polo GTI sits lower than the standard model and comes equipped as standard with adaptive sports suspension for improved handling. Inside, the cabin is accented extensively with red trim, featuring sport seats with enhanced lateral support, a GTI-branded steering wheel with a red 12 o’clock marker, and a generous array of physical buttons. The digital cockpit comprises a 10.25-inch instrument cluster and a 12.9-inch central touchscreen. Under the hood—or rather, under the floor—the ID.Polo GTI is powered by an electric motor producing 223 horsepower and 290 N·m of torque. With a curb weight of 1,540 kg, it accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.8 seconds and has a top speed limited to 175 km/h. Standard features include an electronically controlled front differential and a dedicated GTI driving mode that keeps both powertrain and chassis settings at their most aggressive. The GTI variant is equipped with a 52 kWh ternary lithium-ion battery, offering an estimated WLTP range of 424 kilometers. It supports DC fast charging at up to 105 kW, enabling a charge from 10% to 80% in just 24 minutes. The standard ID.Polo will be offered with a smaller 37 kWh battery and three motor outputs: 114 hp, 133 hp, and 208 hp. Pricing for the ID.Polo GTI starts at approximately €39,000 (around RMB 310,000). With optional extras such as a panoramic sunroof, massage seats, Bridgestone Potenza Sport tires, and a Harman Kardon audio system, the price exceeds €40,000 (roughly RMB 318,000). Customer orders are expected to open in mid-October 2024. Volkswagen emphasized that the introduction of the ID.Polo GTI does not signal the end of internal combustion performance cars. The Golf GTI will remain on sale, potentially into the 2030s. The originally planned all-electric ninth-generation Golf has been delayed to around 2030, and the current Mk8 Golf will continue production in the near term. Volkswagen may eventually offer two generations of the Golf simultaneously—one powered by gasoline and the other based on a dedicated EV platform. For now, only the ID.Polo GTI has been confirmed. However, Volkswagen plans to launch a smaller, more affordable all-electric hatchback in 2025, though it remains undecided whether a performance variant of that model will follow.
