Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) has collaborated with Argonne National Laboratory to develop a novel strategy that converts low-value mixed spent lithium-ion battery cathode materials—including lithium iron phosphate (LFP) and lithium manganese oxide (LMO)—into high-value lithium manganese iron phosphate (LMFP) cathode materials under mild processing conditions. This method achieves a material recovery rate of up to 95% and produces next-generation cathode materials with higher energy density and superior long-term cycling performance. The research, led by Professor Yan Wang, the William B. Smith Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at WPI, was published in the journal *Chem Circularity*.
