On May 21, 2024, Tesla announced that the Model S and Model X production lines at its Fremont, California factory will be dismantled and reconfigured over the next four months to become dedicated production lines for Tesla’s humanoid robots, with a planned annual capacity of one million units. Meanwhile, the company’s Texas Gigafactory is preparing a second-generation humanoid robot production line targeting an annual capacity in the tens of millions. Tesla’s humanoid robots will leverage shared technologies from the company’s vehicle platforms, including batteries, electric motors, and artificial intelligence. In January 2026, Tesla updated its corporate mission, emphasizing a fundamental transformation of transportation through the large-scale deployment of autonomous driving technology and its Robotaxi autonomous ride-hailing service. The company also reaffirmed its commitment to freeing humanity from repetitive labor and building a society of abundance. At a related delivery event, Elon Musk stated that the Model S and Model X were foundational to Tesla’s growth, crediting their success to the team’s meticulous attention to detail.
