In the first quarter of 2026, China's imported vehicle sales totaled 100,000 units, with March alone seeing a year-over-year decline of 28.9% in sales volume and a nearly 40% drop in import value. Over the long term, China’s imported car market has been in continuous contraction: annual imports peaked at 1.43 million units in 2014, then declined steadily each year, falling to 700,000 units in 2024 and further dropping to 480,000 units in 2025. Meanwhile, China’s automobile exports have maintained robust growth, reaching 2.34 million units in the first quarter of 2026—approximately 27 times the同期 import volume. The imported vehicle market now faces a dual challenge of weak sales and downward price pressure. Once dominant in China’s premium segment thanks to their technological and brand advantages, imported internal combustion engine vehicles are now being significantly challenged by domestically produced models in the fields of electrification and intelligent connectivity. Going forward, imported cars are expected to shift toward niche, specialized segments.
