Lars Moravy, Tesla’s Vice President of Vehicle Engineering, stated in a recent podcast that the company hasn’t ruled out the possibility of bringing back the Model S and Model X in the future. He explained that the earlier decision to discontinue these models was based on the assessment that “it wasn’t the right time to continue the program,” but emphasized that “this doesn’t mean they’re gone forever.” Moravy clarified that Tesla is currently not actively developing new versions of the Model S or Model X, though it hasn’t excluded the possibility of reviving them down the line. He also revealed a new reason behind the discontinuation: global crash-test standards are continuously evolving, particularly with Euro NCAP (European New Car Assessment Programme) updating its testing protocols roughly every five years. Moravy noted that Tesla is committed to building “the safest cars on the road,” but the older platform underpinning the Model S and Model X “was never designed” for certain modern crash scenarios. While temporary measures were previously implemented, fully meeting the latest safety standards would require “a massive, comprehensive redesign.” It has been reported that the final batch of Model S and Model X vehicles rolled off the production line on May 21 at Tesla’s Fremont factory in California. The production line will now be repurposed for manufacturing Tesla’s humanoid robot.
